Energy stable and efficient finite-difference nonlinear multigrid schemes for the modified phase field crystal equation

چکیده
In this paper we present two unconditionally energy stable finite difference schemes for the Modified Phase Field Crystal (MPFC) equation, a sixth-order nonlinear damped wave equation, of which the purely parabolic Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model can be viewed as a special case. The first is a convex splitting scheme based on an appropriate decomposition of the discrete energy and is first order accurate in time and second order accurate in space. The second is a new, fully second-order scheme that also respects the convex splitting of the energy. Both schemes are nonlinear but may be formulated from the gradients of strictly convex, coercive functionals. Thus, both are uniquely solvable regardless of the time and space step sizes. The schemes are solved by efficient nonlinear multigrid methods. Numerical results are presented demonstrating the accuracy, energy stability, efficiency, and practical utility of the schemes. An Energy Stable and Convergent Finite-Difference Scheme for the Modified Phase Field Crystal Equation
We present an unconditionally energy stable finite difference scheme for the Modified Phase Field Crystal equation, a generalized damped wave equation for which the usual Phase Field Crystal equation is a special degenerate case. The method is based on a convex splitting of a discrete pseudoenergy and is semi-implicit. The equation at the implicit time level is nonlinear but represents the grad...

We present two accurate and efficient numerical schemes for a phase field dendritic crystal growth model, which is derived from the variation of a free-energy functional, consisting of a temperature dependent bulk potential and a conformational entropy with a gradient-dependent anisotropic coefficient. We introduce a novel Invariant Energy Quadratization approach to transform the free-energy fu...

Abstract. In this paper, we present a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method and two unconditionally energy stable schemes for the phase field crystal (PFC) equation. The semidiscrete energy stability of the LDG method is proved first. The PFC equation is a sixth order nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE), which leads to the severe time step restriction (Δt = O(Δx6)) of explicit tim...

متن کاملAn Efficient, Energy Stable Scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman System
We present an unconditionally energy stable and uniquely solvable finite difference scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system, which is comprised of a Cahn-Hilliard-type diffusion equation and a generalized Brinkman equation modeling fluid flow. The CHB system is a generalization of the Cahn-Hilliard-Stokes model and describes two phase very viscous flows in porous media. The scheme is...
